Trails and Outdoor Adventures Along the Missouri River in Southwest Montana

Hiking the Missouri RiverHiking Trails and Outdoor Adventures Along the Missouri River in Southwest Montana

Southwest Montana is home to some of the state’s most beautiful hiking opportunities, and the communities of Townsend, Helena, Toston, Winston, Radersburg, and Three Forks provide convenient access to trails, mountains, forests, and the scenic Missouri River. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing walk along the river or a more challenging mountain hike, the area offers a wide variety of ways to experience Montana’s outdoors.

One of the best places to enjoy hiking around the Missouri River is near Three Forks, where the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers come together to form the Missouri River. Missouri Headwaters State Park provides opportunities to explore the landscape on foot while taking in views of the river and learning about the area’s natural and historic significance. The river corridor also provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, fishing, and peaceful walks.

Closer to Townsend, hikers can explore the surrounding mountains and public lands. Trails such as Edith Lake Trail provide access to higher elevations and expansive views across the Missouri River Valley and surrounding mountain ranges. The area’s forests and backcountry also offer opportunities to encounter wildlife, including deer, elk, and a variety of birds.

The communities of Toston, Winston, and Radersburg offer another perspective on Southwest Montana’s outdoor landscape. Open valleys, rolling hills, ranch country, and nearby mountain ranges create opportunities for hiking, wildlife watching, and scenic exploration. A short drive from these communities can lead to trails within the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest and surrounding mountain areas.

Helena provides additional access to some of the region’s most accessible hiking trails. Mount Helena and Mount Ascension offer networks of trails where visitors can enjoy mountain scenery and panoramic views without traveling far from the city.

For those who want to explore beyond the developed trail systems, the Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountains provide more rugged hiking opportunities. Forested trails, rocky terrain, mountain meadows, and high-country landscapes offer adventures for a range of experience levels.

From hiking along the Missouri River to exploring mountain trails around Townsend and Helena, Southwest Montana provides countless ways to experience the outdoors. With rivers, mountains, forests, wildlife, and historic landscapes all within reach, this region is an ideal destination for anyone looking to explore Montana on foot.
