Explore Lewis & Clark Trails in Southwest Montana

Southwest Montana offers a unique opportunity to explore the landscapes traveled by the Lewis and Clark Expedition more than 200 years ago. Today, visitors can follow portions of the historic route through river valleys, mountain passes, forests, and open country while enjoying hiking and outdoor recreation. For those searching for Lewis & Clark trails in Southwest Montana, the region provides a fascinating combination of history, scenery, and adventure.

One of the most important areas along the historic route is Missouri Headwaters State Park near Three Forks. Here, the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers come together to form the Missouri River. The Corps of Discovery reached this area in 1805, making the headwaters an important part of the expedition’s journey west. Visitors today can explore walking trails, interpretive areas, and the surrounding river landscape while learning about the expedition’s journey.

The Missouri River provides another excellent way to experience the Lewis & Clark story. Much of the expedition’s route through Montana followed the river and its tributaries. Hiking and exploring along the river allows visitors to experience the same broad valleys and landscapes that helped guide the expedition through Southwest Montana.

The historic route also extends into the mountains around Helena and the Big Belt Mountains. Areas associated with Canyon Ferry and the surrounding Missouri River corridor provide opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, fishing, camping, and scenic exploration. Farther west, trails and historic routes near Lewis and Clark Pass provide a glimpse into the challenging mountain terrain encountered by the expedition.

Exploring these areas is about more than simply following a hiking trail. The landscapes themselves help tell the story. River crossings, mountain passes, open valleys, and forested slopes offer a chance to imagine the challenges faced by the Corps of Discovery as they traveled through unfamiliar territory.

Before exploring any Lewis & Clark trails near Helena, Three Forks, or the Missouri River, check current trail conditions, weather, road access, and seasonal restrictions. Some historic routes are not maintained hiking trails and may require additional planning.

Whether you’re interested in American history, hiking, wildlife, or Montana’s spectacular scenery, exploring the Lewis & Clark Trail in Southwest Montana offers a memorable outdoor experience. From the Missouri River headwaters at Three Forks to the mountain landscapes west of Helena, the region provides countless opportunities to walk through the history and natural beauty of Southwest Montana.
